How Shell Cordovan is made: Horween Leather Co.
Working with Shell Cordovan
Crown Northampton and Shell Cordovan are a natural match, it suits the way we work. Made to order, and made to reward those who wear it in. Shell isn’t easy to handle. The process takes time because every stage requires precision and care. Tanning spans months. Cutting must be deliberate. And no two shells behave quite the same.
We use it anyway because it offers something no other leather can. The depth of colour, the weight in the hand, the way it matures through wear. All of it fits our approach to making shoes. It creases less, shines naturally, and holds its structure while the surface deepens over time.
The Qualities of Shell Cordovan
Tanned in Chicago using a six-month process developed over generations, Horween Shell Cordovan is dense, smooth, and built to last. Each shell is oval in shape and made from a specific part of the horsehide, then hot-stuffed, shaved, and polished by hand over time, building its distinctive sheen.
Horween’s formula remains a closely guarded secret, passed down since 1905. The result is a high-shine leather with no visible grain and a slow-developing patina that gives each pair a unique finish. Our relationship with Horween is built on shared values — we use their Shell Cordovan only where it can be properly respected.
Shinki Hikaku Shell Cordovan
Sourced from Japan and used in very limited numbers, Shinki cordovan is known for its smooth texture, gentle structure, and deep, hand-dyed finish. It is pit-tanned and glazed by hand using traditional Japanese methods passed down over generations. The softness comes from a finishing process that uses a higher concentration of wax and oil than most other cordovan leathers, allowing the fibres to relax while retaining structure.
We select shells that complement our signature styles and offer them in short, made to order runs. Refined, supple, and designed to deepen in character with every wear.
We have built longstanding relationships with makers, tanneries, and collectors in Japan, a culture that, like us, places great value on materials and a commitment to preserving traditional techniques. From the hand-glazed shells of Shinki Hikaku to the showcases in respected department stores where Crown Northampton sneakers occasionally appear, we are proud to align ourselves with an approach that values patience, precision, and craft.
Core Colours and Upkeep
Our Core Shell Cordovan Collection is available year-round in four classic Horween shades: Black, Bourbon, Dark Cognac, and their signature Colour No. 8. To help maintain the finish and longevity of each pair, we also offer Deluxe Care Packs complete with brushes, cloths, polish, and conditioning products specifically selected for use with Shell Cordovan.
Rare Exclusives for a Limited Time
Throughout the year, we release short-run Shell Cordovan editions in rare colours and finishes, each made in batches of 20–30 pairs and individually hand numbered. Each drop is made to order in our Northampton factory and only available while the material lasts.
They follow a regular rhythm, but each release is rare by nature and rarely repeated once sold out.
