We Often Get Asked, “What makes Crown sneakers so different?”

It’s about more than just looks  - it’s the story, craftsmanship, and enduring quality behind every pair. That’s why we’re taking you behind the scenes of our most-loved styles, starting with the Upton Wholecut Sneaker.

This One’s Special

Eight years ago, it became the cornerstone of our sneaker collection, built on patterns inspired by Northampton’s rich shoemaking heritage and crafted with materials traditionally reserved for dress shoes. It’s a nod to tradition, made to suit the way we live today.

Back to Where it All Began in 2016

After years designing for the Japanese market, Chris set out to create something entirely unique. The Upton’s clean, minimal design wasn’t intentional; it was the materials themselves that dictated this direction. By focusing on the best leathers in the world and only using stitches where absolutely necessary, the Upton naturally evolved into a design that has gained recognition for its understated elegance.

And like our sneakers, it carries a connection to our roots, names after countryside area right here in Northamptonshire.

Pattern & Design

Wholecut sneakers are rare, and for good reason. Each pair is crafted from a single unbroken piece of leather, highlighting both the quality of the material and the expertise of our craftspeople. Every piece is carefully selected by our clickers, with no shortcuts. Unlike mass-produced sneakers, where cost often dictates design, the Upton prioritises integrity - of material, construction, and design.

We didn’t stop there. Partnering with Spring Line Lasts, we developed a custom last in three fittings (E, F, and G) to ensure options for the perfect fit. From there, we commissioned a bespoke sole tailored specifically to that last.

The result? A silhouette that’s timeless yet modern, with clean lines and proportions that flatter every foot.

The Materials

Northamptonshire is known for its use of the world-renowned calf leather, traditionally used for dress shoes. For sneakers we needed something a little softer but the same quality and so spent a year sampling and testing box calf until we found the perfect look and feel from the very same tanneries.

Since its original launch in white Box Calf, we’ve continued to innovate with rare and characterful leathers. We were the first to introduce Horween Chromexcel into sneakers and now offer Uptons made to order in Buffalo and Shell Cordovan. These materials age beautifully, developing patina and character over time, while moulding to your feet for a truly personal fit.

Built to Last

The Upton isn’t just a beautiful and rare sneaker - it’s designed to stand the test of time. With a durable rubber sole and a fully resoleable construction, it’s built to be worn and enjoyed for years to come.

Your Upton Questions, Answered…

Q. How long does it take to break in?

A. Premium leather takes a little time to adjust. We recommend wearing your Uptons 4-6 times to let the leather mould comfortably to your feet.

Q. What makes them so comfortable?

A. It’s all in the details. Every pair of Uptons is lined with premium calf leather and includes a removable insole for added support and cushioning. On top of that, we’ve taken further inspiration from dress shoes by reversing the counter material - this adds grip, durability and helps prevent blisters, so you can enjoy extra comfort from day one.

Tip: If you have wider feet, consider the G fit. The one-piece leather design offers slightly less give compared to a Derby sneaker, so the wider fit ensures extra comfort.

Q. Can they be resoled?

A. Absolutely. Uptons are built to last, and our resole service ensures you can keep wearing them for years to come.

Q. What if I’d prefer a different leather?

A. Just ask! Every pair is made to order, so we can tailor them to your preferences, including the leather of your choice.
