The Ernest wholecut is the first of our hand welted collection, made in collaboration with our sister brand, E Woodford & Sons. Every sneaker is lasted and stitched completely by hand in our Northampton Factory using English Oak Bark tanned leather and components.
The Upper is hand lasted by pins to a channeled insole; a double welt is then hand stitched to create a sidewall and lower welt. Cork is applied along with a through and Lactae Hevea sole, which is hand stitched in place to the lower welt.
The process has taken years from design to completion. It is our re-engineering of traditional methods of shoe making by artisans like our owner Chris Woodford's great grandfather, Ernest. The welted method of shoe making built Northampton’s renowned reputation as the ‘shoe capital of the world’ and we are proud to continue it.
The Deluxe pack is designed and crafted to meet the standard of the sneakers. It is hand made in England and lined with the veg tan calf leather used in the very sneakers you have selected, it carries:

- A belt from the very same English calf skin as the sneakers
- Crown Northampton Horse hair brush

- Saphir Renovateur cream

Material
The uppers, welt and components are all Oak bark tanned English leather from J & FJ Baker, lined with veg tan baby calf and finished with a stitched Lactea Havea sole. Every material selected to patina gaining more unique character with each wear.
Craft
Every process that goes into The Ernest is a refined version of handcrafting techniques passed through the generations our town is famous for. We take the process back to before the machines of mass production, the true meaning of hand made!
Collaboration
A hand welting method, created here in our factory in 2024. A true collaboration of the traditional methods of our sister company E Woodford & Sons and Crown Northampton’s modern minimal design philosophy, every stitch for a reason.
