Norwegian Shrunken Ox: The Perfect Leather For A Limited Edition Rambler

Posted by Crown Northampton on

For decades, we have sourced leathers from CF Stead in Leeds. beginning with the Janus calf suede first tanned for the Northampton shoe trade in the 1960s. We still use it today, alongside their rich kudu leathers that are full of depth and character. Every visit to the tannery brings the same question from Chris: is there something new or rare that mass production cannot use?

Most of what we see is not right for us. The leather has to suit the shoe, the pattern, the weight, and the purpose. This time, what we found was remarkable. Twelve-year-old Norwegian Shrunken Ox hides, stored since they were first tanned, were offered for testing. The results were exceptional and the material proved to be a perfect match for the Everdon Rambler.

What is Norwegian Shrunken Ox

The musk ox is one of the oldest mammals still walking the earth. For more than twenty thousand years it has roamed the Arctic tundra, protected by a dense outer coat and a soft under-fleece prized for its warmth. Smaller than the bison (its closest relative) but equally strong, its hide carries a deep natural toughness that suits the kind of purposeful footwear we make.

Why It Suits The Everdon Rambler And Crown

Much like the buffalo we often use, Norwegian Ox leather has a tight fibre structure on the surface and a looser layer beneath. That balance gives it durability without stiffness, allowing the shoe to break in quickly and mould to the foot.

During tanning, the hides are shrunken from around thirty square feet to under twenty. This tightens the fibres and improves natural water resistance. The finish is pure aniline, meaning the leather is dyed with transparent colour that sinks into the surface rather than coating it, allowing the natural grain and markings of the hide to remain visible. Only the best sections can be used, and the colours are limited to natural tones such as black, brown, oak, chestnut, and snuff. Honest, organic shades that sit comfortably within our palette.

Originally, CF Stead tanned this leather for Hermès, which tells you something about its calibre. Its condition today, over a decade later, proves its quality. The hides still cut cleanly, handle beautifully, and finish with the depth of character that only time can create.

Limited Quantity

We are fortunate to have enough to make a small run of Ramblers in four colours: Black, Oak, Chestnut, and Snuff. Once they are gone, that is it. Norwegian Shrunken Ox of this age and integrity will not appear again.

Working with rare and storied materials like this calls for experience, and our shoemakers can truly work their magic with leathers of this kind. Each pair reflects the craft, patience, and character that define Crown Northampton.

Care

Care for Norwegian Shrunken Ox as you would our buffalo leather. We recommend the Buffalo Care Bundle available on our website, along with a pair of wooden shoe trees to help absorb moisture and maintain shape. The shoe trees are made just up the road from our factory in Northampton.

Wearing The Rambler

The Everdon Rambler is a walking boot that is made with real distinction. Practical in shape, refined in detail, and easy to wear on or off the trail. The Norwegian Shrunken Ox leather gives each pair real strength and character. Its surface has real presence, marked by the grain and shape of the hide rather than any finish on top, and feels unlike anything made in volume.

The upper is cut from a single piece of leather and finished with French binding for strength. Inside, a full vegetable-tanned lining allows the boot to breathe and form to the foot. The footbed is filled by hand with natural cork for comfort. D-rings and speed hooks replace standard eyelets, making lacing quick and secure. Underfoot, a Vibram all-weather sole gives grip, cushioning, and durability through the seasons.

Its low-profile silhouette sits comfortably between a boot and a sneaker, making it as easy to wear in town as it is on the trail. It works with denim and knitwear or under more tailored clothes. A walking boot built to travel far and wear well, made from a leather that will not come round again.
