The New Cordovan Abbey Oxford

Posted by Crown Northampton on

Horween Shell Cordovan is a rare and highly sought-after leather. Availability is limited, not just by the declining supply of raw material, but by the dwindling number of craftspeople with the knowledge required to tan them. That process still takes place in Chicago, as it has for generations.

We Are The Makers

Working with Shell Cordovan in Northampton means adapting our process to match the rarity and cost of each individual piece. No two deliveries are ever the same. Shell size, weight, and colour can vary dramatically. It began with one colour and one style, growing slowly over time. For every pair sold, we reinvested in more material. That approach, over decades, is what built the range we can offer today.

After 30 years of working with this leather, we now hold stock across four colours and three sneaker styles, with matching belts available for each. That matters. It means you can place an order with confidence, not based on speculative pre-orders but on material we already have, ready to be cut. Every shell is hand-selected for its intended purpose, carefully matched in size and tone, and set aside for the right pattern.

Our Commitment To The Craft

Slow, steady, and considered is not the norm in today’s fast-paced world. But it is exactly what sets our work apart. No gimmicks. Just the finest materials from the best tanneries, used with care and respect.

We pair each upper with linings and components drawn from the traditions of Northampton shoemaking. These elements are just as important as the leather itself, and essential to creating a shoe that holds its shape and supports the foot over time. A long-term commitment to a long-term craft is what allows us to make every pair to order, and to make it well.

The Oxford Pattern

The Oxford is the third pattern in our Cordovan sneaker collection, though it is the oldest in historical terms. The design originated in the late 18th century in the city of Oxford, when university students began moving away from tall riding boots that had dominated formalwear. They wanted something more comfortable, more versatile, and more reflective of their own generation. That spirit of quiet rebellion is one we have embraced in adapting the Oxford to today’s world.

It remains one of the most recognisable footwear patterns, and a cornerstone of the traditional Northampton repertoire. With its slim profile, closed lacing, and characteristic vamp, the Oxford lends itself well to our sneaker format. This version brings a slightly more structured and formal presence to the collection than the Harlestone or Everdon, but still retains the comfort and balance of a true sneaker. Our signature French binding and hand stitch detail carry through, adding texture and tactility that speak to the handmade nature of the design.

Lasts, Fittings, And The Human Touch

The Oxford Cordovan is made on our dedicated Hand Stitch lasts, developed with Springline in Northampton. It is available in three width fittings, with more bespoke adjustments available on request.

Our in-factory customer service team is always on hand to assist with sizing, leather advice, or any design-related questions. The goal is simple. To offer the kind of personal, knowledgeable service you might have received when the Oxford pattern first appeared on British high streets, centuries ago.
